NHL Equivalencies

All scoring stats presented in graphs and comparisons on the site are generated via Robb Vollmans NHL Equivalencies.

NHLE’s standardize junior scoring by converting them into a projected level of NHL points. This allows you to adjust for differences in scoring rates between drafts and era’s and compare all players on equal footing.

The table on the right lists all current NHLE coefficients currently on use for this site and each league.

Please note that some NHLE’s are less reliable than others. We will update our NHLE coefficients as more accurate numbers are released, with absolute credit to the parties responsible.

All NHLE numbers are generated on a Point Per Game basis and applied to an 82 game season. This eliminates discrepancies between players who scored at a lower rate due to missed games and provides a more accurate measure of players ability.

Projection Methodology

Our current projection methodology matches your searched player based on NHLE per Game in their Draft Year.

Any drafted player who scored at a rate within +/- 4(Updated March 25) NHLE in their draft year will be considered a comparable.

Example: If you searched a player who had a scoring rate of 28 NHLE any player who scored between a 26-30 NHLE rate will be counted in your comparison.

This benchmark provides an adequate sample for most scoring levels and provides a reasonable comparison. We will soon be adding the ability to modify what scoring criteria you would like to match on.

All players found are then sorted into definitions based on their careers (NHL Players, Busts, still-developing)

Players who played in the NHL are then broken down into sub-definitions based on their career performance (elite, 1st liner, 3rd pairing, etc)

The graphs and tables show the total number of players in each bucket and threshold. This gives you the historical probability of what type of player the prospect you projected will become.

Optional Height filtering is available as well. Enter the number of inch spread you want in your comparison (2 will return players within 2 inches of your search's height) Enter 0 to ignore the height comparison.

    Cumulative vs match each year:strong

Selecting Cumulative will do a total Tally of NHLE production over the players career up to and including the latest year selected. Match Each Year will match only players who performed similarly in each year selected. If their is no data for the year you've selected the software will match based on the closest. (Ex: if you select DY, DY +1, and DY +2 but their is no data for DY +2 the player will match off DY and DY +1.)

Definitions

NHL Player:200 NHL Games Played by Draft Year + 5 or 100 GP for players who have not yet reached Draft year +5

Bust:Failure to reach 200 NHL games played by age 25

Still Developing:Players who have not played 100 games and have not yet reached their Draft Year +5 season

Elite Forward:1+ seasons scoring 70+ pts

1st Liner:1+ seasons scoring 55+pts

2nd Liner1+ seasons scoring 40+pts

3rd Liner1+ seasons scoring 28+ pts

4th Liner1+ seasons scoring 15+pts

Depth LinerLess than 15 pts in a season

Elite Defender:1+ seasons scoring 50+ pts

1st Pairing:1+ seasons scoring 30+pts

2nd Pairing:1+ seasons scoring 18+pts

3rd Pairing:1+ seasons scoring 9+ pts

Depth DefenderNever scored 9 pts in a season

These are obvious proxies. We will be updating the Player Classification breaks in the future. We have selected these point breaks as they represent the high end of scoring for each "line". (example, 55+ points falls into the upper echelon of a minimum top 90 scoring. 30 Teams X 3 First liners = top 30. The assumption being that if a player has reached this level of scoring at least once, with adequate usage they should be able to fill that role on a significant portion of NHL teams). As better data becomes available we will create more accurate classification breaks. Please be cognizant of the limitations of this criteria ESPECIALLY for Defense-men.

Team Draft History

This screen allows you to generate a graph comparing various teams draft histories.

Plots are based on NHLers pulled in each round. "NHL" player threshold is set at 200gp.

League Draft Stats

This tool allows you to take a snapshot of how well certain criteria corresponds to NHL success across different leagues.

Select the league you want to examine. Then select the criteria. The software should create a graph showing the correlation of values to NHL success.

As this site is in beta please understand not all graphs will render properly. If you have the know-how to fix this, please contact us!
